Downtown Park Plan
city of saline
The City of Saline Downtown Park Plan analyzes six parking lots to see which ones would be feasible as a gathering space. Parks and Recreation is one of the many services that we offer.
This Plan was done in collaboration with OHM Advisors, and City Staff. The idea of a gathering space in Saline’s downtown has been envisioned in City policy and planning documents for many years, and most recently confirmed in the 2023 adopted City of Saline Master Plan.
Each site was analyzed and scored on the criteria of:
Dimensions & Physical Features
Pedestrian Linkages
Encumbrances
Activation Potential
After close examination, we determined that one parking lot was feasible as a gathering space.
Two focus groups were held that included pointed and elected officials, downtown business and property owners, and community stakeholders. There was a consensus from the focus groups that the gathering space should serve as a central gathering space with seating and shade, be an attractive destination for people of all ages, be equally inviting for passive recreation and events, and provide year-round use and programming. A concept plan was created to include a gateway structure and stage, multiuse turf space, flexible seating, shade areas, a kids play area, and a mix of landscaping and hardscaping. The concept plan includes two phases to turn the parking lot into a gathering space.
