Matteo Passalacqua Returned to Help Teach Loon Lake Elementary 4th Graders about Local Government
Matteo joined the City of Wixom Mayor Patrick Beagle, Ken Pike of SAFEBuilt, and City of Wixom Assistant City Manager & Director of Economic Development Drew Benson to guide the students through the steps to build a house.
The teacher of the class had assigned the students the task of building a small house and in doing so, invited the experts to teach the children about how get the proper permits for construction. They discussed identifying the proper zone to build in, researching the requirements for that zone, and how one can get creative with the rules as it relates to their own homes.
The importance of zoning was emphasized via a simple question to the students; would they rather live next to an onion factory or a park?
The discussion also covered master planning and how the students can get involved when the City of Wixom updates their Master Plan.
