Model Environmental Ordinances
Macomb County, MI

The Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development strives to strike a balance between natural feature preservation and development to help maintain the quality of life for its residents. To assist County communities in meeting this goal, the Department collaborated with Carlisle/Wortman Associates, Inc. to develop environmental ordinances on the following topics: stormwater management, floodplain management, wetlands, natural feature setback/buffer, native landscaping, woodlands/trees, and resource overlay districts.

Sidebars within the ordinances were used to discuss important components of each regulation, and issues to consider. The reader was also informed that the ordinances were written to include a wide range of provisions – some of which may or may not be appropriate for every community. Individual communities were instructed to decide which provisions work best in the context of their overall development regulations, and adapt the model language to fit their community’s specific needs and conditions.
