Indianwood Roundabout
Charter Township of Orion, MI

The Baldwin, Indianwood, and Coats intersection is one of the busiest intersections in the Township. For this reason, it was chosen for roundabout construction by the Road Commission for Oakland County. Recently, roundabouts have become popular around the world and in the U.S. The roundabout concept was developed in England where it has proven to be the safest, most efficient way to move traffic through intersections. The installation of this roundabout was completed in 2006.

Orion saw this project as an opportunity to create a gateway into the Township, as this intersection is a major community entry from the north and west. The roundabout design includes a low brick wall identifying the Township and flagpoles that introduce a vertical element marking the site. Because no irrigation was possible for this site, a cobblestone mulch was used for ease of maintenance. Four large deciduous trees, along with junipers, flowering perennials, bulbs, and grass were selected for their drought-tolerance and for creating a display of colors that would extend throughout the growing season.
