Downtown Parking Study
City of Clawson, MI

The City of Clawson Downtown Development Authority (DDA) began a parking study as a result of a need to upgrade the downtown, encourage future development, improve the business climate, and promote a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly downtown.

The study examined current parking conditions, assessed future parking needs, and formulated conclusions and recommendations for parking in the downtown area. Although the current parking supply is adequate to meet the current demand, it is clear that upon build-out of the downtown, there will be a need for additional parking. The DDA’s vision for downtown Clawson includes mixed use multi-story buildings located along the major streets with parking structures in the center of blocks accessed through alleyways. This plan would increase downtown office and retail uses by six to twelve times their current numbers.

Strategies are recommended for managing parking as the downtown redevelops. They include considerations for employee and patron parking spaces, time limits, payment systems, public and private cooperation, and targeting areas for development of parking structures.
