With growth comes change, and the Village of Dexter wanted to ensure that change didn’t diminish the community’s positive attributes. With this in mind, Carlisle/Wortman Associates recommended that Dexter conduct the Smart Growth Readiness Assessment Tool (SGRAT), an evaluation process developed by Michigan State University that illustrates how well a community is positioned to implement Smart Growth principles through future development.

Carlisle/Wortman Associates was retained by Dexter to facilitate its Smart Growth Readiness Assessment, and guided Dexter through evaluating growth in the Village and identifying tools that may better help the community produce a smart pattern of growth in the future.

The results identified four areas where the Village could improve its planning and regulations to better implement Smart Growth. The Village has formed a subcommittee who has been charged with prioritizing the areas to address first, and identify the solutions that make the most sense for Dexter.
