master plan & zoning ordinance
village of byron, Mi

The small Village of Byron has a long history as a center of commerce and pleasant residential community. Located along the banks of the Shiawassee River, this character was identified as one of the most important assets residents want to preserve as it grows in the future. The Village came to this conclusion through public meetings held to develop a community Master Plan, a process which was led by Carlisle/Wortman Associates. While the plan contains goals and objectives on a full range of topics, the goals associated with preserving Byron’s small-town character called upon using the Zoning Ordinance as the primary tool to achieve this.

Shortly after the Master Plan was adopted, the Village and Carlisle/Wortman staff began working on updating the Zoning Ordinance to achieve the vision outlined in the new plan. The ordinance contains many tools that will allow the Village flexibility in response to development proposals. For example, ordinances that allow mixed use development, development that is consistent with the town’s historic character, and ordinances that work to help enhance the visual appearance of the Village through setbacks, landscaping, lighting, signs and other elements are included.
